Many of our members have a desire to become more than a therapy team. They want to add a specialty to their volunteer service by also becoming a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) team.
You can find out more about the R.E.A.D. program here.
If you think the R.E.A.D. program may be right for you and your dog, keep on reading (no pun intended, of course)!
Becoming a Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) Therapy Team
Mutts on a Mission, Inc. is very proud to be an affiliate of Intermountain Therapy Animals R.E.A.D. Program! If you join our organization and wish to become R.E.A.D. registered you will be able to join a world class organization that has been a pioneer in children’s literacy.
The R.E.A.D. Mission
The mission of the R.E.A.D. program is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of registered therapy teams as literacy mentors.
The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to your dog. But not just any dog. R.E.A.D. companions are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children.
R.E.A.D. is the first and foremost program that utilizes therapy animals to help kids improve their reading and communication skills and also teaches them to love books and reading. It’s been growing around the world since November of 1999 when ITA launched it in Salt Lake City, Utah. More than 3,500 therapy teams have trained and registered with the program and are going strong!
Today, thousands of registered R.E.A.D. teams work throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, France, Sweden, South Africa, Slovenia, Spain, Netherlands, Norway and beyond. R.E.A.D. is one of those ideas that, in the works of Bill Moyers, “pierces the mundane to arrive at the marvelous.”
Steps to Become a R.E.A.D. Team:
- Get registered with an animal-assisted therapy group. You must become a registered therapy team by completing our one day workshop and evaluation that we offer throughout the year. This will give you insurance during a visit along with some of the training you will need.
- Complete the R.E.A.D. Workshop that is sponsored and led by the professionals of Intermountain Therapy Animals. You will be asked to complete an application, policies and procedures, and a 35 question written test.
